At Edgefield Primary School, opportunities are created for Tamil Language pupils to use Spoken Tamil in an authentic setting inside and outside the classroom. Primary 2 pupils have an authentic experience of going “shopping” to purchase food items at the market stalls set up specially for them. Several scaffolding activities are conducted before the actual marketing activity. Our aim is to encourage pupils to learn Tamil in a fun and engaging way. This activity has boosted pupils’ communicative skills, confidence as well as financial and entrepreneurial literacy.
Through this activity, pupils learn how to plan a healthy meal, identify items sold at the different stalls, use appropriate spoken language and bargain politely when buying goods. In their reflections, pupils shared that this activity was a joyful and meaningful experience for them.
