Ms Karen Wong is a Principal Learning Support Facilitator at the Department of Child Development, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). She has 15 years of experience teaching literacy to pre-schoolers and primary school-aged learners with developmental needs. She is also part of the consultancy team under the Development Support-Learning Support (DS-LS) Programme where she works closely with Learning Support Educators (LSEd) to support children with specific learning differences in the classroom.

Have you ever wondered how we can help young children build meaningful connections between print and their own prior knowledge and background experiences? Research findings show that engaging young children in book-reading is vital for language and literacy acquisition in the early childhood years and beyond. This workshop aims to promote language and emergent literacy in young children through a variety of book-reading approaches. The approaches will equip educators and parents with ways to scaffold children’s oral language and reading and writing skills through book-reading. The various strategies will be shared with the participants through interactive discussions and hands-on practices during the workshop.
